I recently became a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) for the Central Massachusetts area. The DAT is called out for any disaster – floods, hurricanes, you name it, but our bread and butter is assisting victims of fires. In our area last year, the ice storm was a major incident for the team.
At a minimum, we can give you some water and snacks and a comfort kit which contains some basic grooming needs. But we might also supply you with a place to stay that night and some money for food and clothing. We also offer psychological support and can put you in touch with all sorts of other services.
I thought I had a pretty fair idea what the Red Cross did but I was surprised at what all they can do!
It feels good to help out. You should consider it! I’m glad I did.
